Why NOMISS?
The University
of Hawai'i at Hilo ( UHH )
offers the only baccalaureate astronomy degree program in the State
of Hawai'i, and has on it's campus the base facilities of most of
the Mauna
Kea Observatories. It is well-situated to provide
the preprofessional training needed for students, including those
of Hawaiian ancestry, to obtain careers in astronomy and employment
in Mauna Kea Observatories.
In cooperation with the Department of Education (DOE) and Kamehameha
Schools, it is prepared to extend astronomy-related outreach programs
to K-12 students and teachers based on the observational astronomy
conducted by Mauna Kea Observatories, and targeted especially, (but
not exclusively) on students of Hawaiian/Pacific Island ancestry.
