News & Notes: From February 14-17, 2003, I'll be away at a teachers' retreat in
West Hawaii. Thus, I will be unable to update player statistics
until my return. Team statistics should continue to be available
barring a major problem. The NHL & NFL scoreboards will continue
to update automatically. Normal operations resume on February 17.

On January 31, 1999, Hilo was hit with a bad lightning storm.
Lightning bolts damaged much equipment on the UH-Hilo campus,
including hubs, transceivers, and surge protectors. The result
was a general network failure, which persisted until February 2
when bad components were located and replaced. The Maxwell and
Einstein servers were not affected by the disruption, but were
unfortunately isolated from the rest of the world for two days.
During such disruptions, please check the following URL for the
latest updates: http://uhunix2.uhcc.hawaii.edu:1749/index.html.

When disruptions or breakdowns occur to local area networks in
the University of Hawaii system, Internet access to mainland
sites for Hawaii networks may be cut off. When such breakdowns
or disruptions occur, updates are not forthcoming until network
problems are resolved. UH Hilo relies on routing all connections
to the main UH campus in Honolulu, due to limited UHH resources.
The last system network breakdown occurred on January 2-4, 1999.

Occasionally people have had problems downloading "long" files
from the Maxwell server. The long file is truncated before the
transfer process is completed, and some part of it is missing.
I have discovered that this truncation occurs for two reasons:

(1) The server is extremely busy and can't handle more requests
(2) Your browser is not correctly configured to handle timeouts

The problem does NOT arise if you are using a Unix-based browser
regardless of how busy the server is. Since I know most people
are using PC-based browser software, I have initiated corrective
measures by restarting the WWW server 4 times a day, and by
increasing the server process priority on the system. This fix
removes the truncation for the short term, but when the server
gets busy again, the problem resurfaces. You have two choices:

(a) Access my page from a Unix system if one is available
(b) Use the backup server at http://hubble.uhh.hawaii.edu

Questions? Please read this FAQ file first...
Note: Before I respond to your question(s), you must answer the following two
questions correctly, and must provide the answers at the top of your message:
(a) How many questions do I answer in my FAQ file? (see the above link to it)
(b) What is the name of my Fortran program that checks to make sure that the
tabulated statistics are internally consistent with the newspaper box scores?
As of November 15, 1996, if you do not answer both these questions correctly in
your E-mail message to me, you will NOT get a response, and shouldn't expect one!
Thanks for your interest in my home page and for your encouragement!
Richard Crowe
